NHS England in Cheshire & Merseyside is preparing to launch community-based weight management services this summer, which will include access to Mounjaro (tirzepatide) for eligible patients. This follows the national rollout that began across England this week

What you need to know:

1. What is Mounjaro?

  • Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injection that mimics gut hormones to curb appetite, slow digestion, support blood sugar control, and encourage weight loss

2. Who is eligible, and when?

  • Cheshire & Merseyside has a three-phase rollout:
  • Cohort 1 (from 23 June 2025): BMI ≥ 40 (or ≥ 37.5 for certain ethnic groups) and at least four related long-term conditions (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, heart disease, sleep apnoea)
  • Cohort 2 (from 23 June 2026): Same conditions, BMI 35–39.9.
  • Cohort 3 (from 1 April 2027): At least three listed conditions and BMI ≥ 40

3. How can you access it?

  • You cannot yet request Mounjaro directly via Eric Moore Partnership Medical Practice or your GP. The service isn’t live yet.
Eligible patients will be invited to join the community-based programme once it starts.
Expect full lifestyle support – diet, activity, behavioural change – to go alongside the medication, as required by NICE

4. What if I’m not yet eligible or want it sooner?

  • You may be directed to specialist weight services (Tier 3) or NHS digital support programmes. Private prescribing of GLP‑1 drugs (e.g., semaglutide or liraglutide) remains unavailable via NHS GPs
  1. If you meet Cohort 1 criteria, keep an eye on messages from Eric Moore Partnership Medical Practice we’ll contact eligible patients once the local service is ready.
  2. Don’t worry If you don’t yet meet criteria, there will be wider eligibility in phases 2 and 3. In the meantime, talk to us about existing NHS weight-management support options.
  3. As always, lifestyle measures remain crucial: a balanced diet, regular activity, and preventing further weight gain are the foundation of good health.
